[In my case, my friend was invisible to others. And not imaginary. He left when I was about 4 and a half. His name was Heygo. According to my Mom, I didn't blame him for my behavior, good or bad. I did talk with and about him when he was present. One day, we were riding in the car and I told Mom he flew out the window. He left and it seemed that I was fine with that. I never mentioned him again. (He was a little person.)
I have encountered children who have 'invisible' friends who are ghosts. Some children see them. Adults who prefer to consider them "imaginary" are at a disadvantage. When children realize adults are clueless they can simply stop talking about the friend to placate the adults.]
